The color like a thought by equivoque The color like a thought by equivoque
Full Title: The color like a thought that grows

IX

And the color, the overcast blue
Of the air, in which the blue guitar

Is a form, described but difficult,
And I am merely a shadow hunched

Above the arrowy, still strings,
The maker of a thing yet to be made;

The color like a thought that grows
Out of a mood, the tragic robe

Of the actor, half his gesture, half
His speech, the dress of his meaning, silk

Sodden with his melancholy words,
The weather of his stage, himself.

from The Man with the Blue Guitar by Wallace Stevens

Shooting into sunlight and mist with expiring film...

Polaroid SX-70
Time-Zero film

Another Time Zero. It's just like time freezes and never moves--stops at zero.

The blueish look of the film gives a nice touch on the photo.

I want to understand how you work, equivoque. How do you capture these wispy photographs so well? Do you know the exact outcome of your photographs beforehand, anticipating the outcome of expired film, or are you as surprised as we are when we see how well that works?
Are you inspired by the music of the spheres or the digital hum of the world around you?
Question, question, question.

i have a fairly good idea about what to expect from my film, but i can't account in advance for any strangeness resulting from expired film. it depends on how expired it is. this film has been well cared for. mostly, i try to find lighting situations that i think will work for my film!

I don't normally like some of the poetry people use to illustrate their pictures, as I'm more a modern poetry person - no offense to you - but I truly enjoy Wallace Stevens, and seeing that made me smile. (:

sometimes when i can't think of a title for a piece, a fragment of poetry will come to mind. it's not so much that i want to illustrate my photograph as it is that i don't want people to think i'm stealing others' work for my titles. :D i adore wallace stevens!

Yes, I often find that certain photographs allow me to recall a poem that incites similar emotion...I love Wallace Stevens' "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird", and I'll definitely have to look up the one that you posted. ;D

i think that complete poem is readily available online. i'm partial to the idea of order at key west. hope i got the name correct.

Oh, wow. I actually know the poem that you're refering to. And I'm sorry that that's all I have to tell you, not some amazing comment. But it is a beautiful picture and, paired with those words, it makes an incredible image.

thanks. there was no texture added. the expired time-zero did the texturing all by itself. :D

look what the expiration is doing to the emulsion. you can't tell what is cloud and what is film. and there is some textural stuff going on with reds too. when i blew it up (hi res scan), i was amazed at what the expiration was doing to the film. i need to hurry up and use it.

it's just a shame about the film... you must've been really annoyed at the discontinuation of time-zero.
